Third graders of Jennie Reed Elementary School greeted the winter Book to Home distribution with warm smiles and a fervor for reading. Books were delivered by the Early Learning and Reading Network, a joint effort by Graduate Tacoma and Greentrike on December 21, 2021. This delivery marks the third Book to Home distribution for this group of third grade students at Jennie Reed.

In this kit, students received the book The Day You Begin, the featured children’s selection for Tacoma Reads (a program of Tacoma Public Library). Students were also provided materials to create a collaged self-portrait and reflect on the important characteristics and attributes that they see in themselves.

In general, the students were impressed and grateful for the book and materials. A black felt tip pen was a delightful and impressive discovery for many friends.  While reading one of the supporting documents, one student mentioned, “Oh, this is from Graduate Tacoma. That’s awesome that they know I’m going to graduate!”

Partners in Early Learning and Reading

Book to Home is one of the strategies of the Early Learning and Reading Network (ELRN) that helps to promote a joyful connection to reading. The ELRN is dedicated to promoting participation in enriching early learning experiences, increasing family engagement, and developing a strong foundation of skills to support lifelong learning.

Greentrike has been a proud member of the ELRN network for over 10 years and looks forward to the continued opportunities to partner with children, youth, families, and educators in meaningful, joyful, and creative ways.
