Every day, volunteers dedicate their valuable time and talent to helping Greentrike and the Museums provide playful experiences for children, youth, and families. Whether they are engaging in Early Learning activities with Museum visitors, helping to set up special events, assembling Greentrike Cares Kits, or any number of other critical work, our volunteers do amazing work to benefit children, youth, and families in our community.
Among them is Kayla, a volunteer Playguide who shares her passions for art, music, and education not only with the community, but also with her one-year-old daughter, Remi, as she volunteers at the Children’s Museum of Tacoma.
What is a Playguide?
When you walk into the galleries of the Children’s Museums of Tacoma and at JBLM, Playguides are the adults that ask questions, help with art projects, read books to visitors, and more.
You may find Playguides like Kayla asking questions and making observations in the art studios, building a tower alongside a child, reading a book to a group of visitors, or teaching new skills.
Kayla recalls one of her favorite memories, describing her experience of “teaching children how to do origami in the craft studio and getting to see the joy and fulfillment on their faces as they learned something new!”
Volunteering at the Museum
Kayla found the Greentrike volunteer program while bringing her daughter to the Museum to play, where she found that she could be a part of the Museum’s mission with her daughter and have an outlet to share the things she loves such as art, music, and physical activity with children and families and use those skills to help others learn and play.
Kayla says that becoming a Greentrike volunteer has taught her much about children and community. “I have gotten to learn and experience the power of play first hand through watching families bond and engage with each other and seeing my own daughter grow in her own confidence through playing and interacting with the amazing staff and children at the museum,” she explains. “Volunteering has been so rewarding and created many amazing memories for both my daughter and I.”
Greentrike volunteers work in a variety of programs, including the Children’s Museums of Tacoma and at JBLM, Play to Learn Pierce County, and much more!
