April is an important month for children, with both the Week of the Young Child and the Month of the Military Child falling within this month.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families.

Greentrike celebrates the Week of the Young Child during this time and beyond with activities and programs for early learners and their caregivers in order to model equitable access to playful experiences for children, youth, and families. We believe that play is essential for learning, joy, and a thriving community, so these programs and resources are only a few ways that we celebrate early learners, honor children and youth, and champion play!

Museum Fun Days

While the nationwide Week of the Young Child took place April 6 – 12, the Children’s Museums of Tacoma and at JBLM celebrated their themed Museum Fun Days from April 4–8. During this period, we chose to honor our youngest learners through the creation of collaborative canvasses. This artistic endeavor was chosen by our team to help children develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills as they make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands as a team.

Play to Learn

Play to Learn is a free program for children ages birth to six with their caregivers. Classes are typically set up in a community gathering space: libraries, community centers, and more. Our friendly coordinators and volunteers welcome families at the door, invite them to play individually or with others at various activity stations, facilitate group activities, sing songs, and dance before gathering everyone in a group circle time.

Classes are held at locations across Pierce County. To learn more and find sessions near you, visit our Play to Learn schedule!

Play at Home

The official Week of the Young Child may have passed, but we believe that it’s always a good day to learn and play! Looking for some fun and educational activities that adults and children can do at home together? We’ve compiled tons of at-home activity printables designed by Greentrike’s early learning team. Find them here!

April Playful Guide

Each month, Greentrike puts together a Playful Guide, with book recommendations, local resources, and more. This month’s Playful Guide centers on the Month of the Military Child, which celebrates the unique experiences of more than 1.6 million military children, and resources for the families who are located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
