Preschool Powered by Play

Helping prepare children to be confident and eager learners

Inspired by the Best in Early Childhood Education

We believe in the innate capacity of children to wonder, hypothesize, investigate and direct their own learning. Facilitators listen, observe, and provoke thoughtful investigations to follow the emergent interests of children within the Museum and carefully designed play-based classroom. Each learner and the collection of learners create an invested, collaborative and compassionate community that celebrates each person’s unique spark, gifts, and talents. We offer Toddler and Preschool Classes through Preschool Powered by Play.

Serving children ages 2 – 5 years old and their adults, this relationship-based program supports parental engagement in and encouragement of the natural, playful discovery process, helping prepare children to be confident and eager learners who are ready for school and their life journey.

Our Preschool Classes are offered at two locations, Hoyt Early Learning Center and the Children’s Museum of Tacoma. Three or Five-day per week classes for children ages 3 – 5 year old.

Toddler Classes are offered at both Hoyt Early Learning Center Campus and Children’s Museum of Tacoma Campus, two consecutive days a week, providing a foundation for familiarity with routine and learning through playful experiences, interactions, and environments.

Classes fill up fast, and we do hold a waitlist of applicants. Classes are available for the 3-day and 5-day pre-school classes at the Hoyt campus.

COVID Policies

( Updated 03.12.2022. Current policies are subject to change as new updates become available. )

Masks will be encouraged, but are no longer required, indoors and outdoors.  Program participants and staff can choose to continue to wear a mask or not wear a mask.  We acknowledge that changes with public masking can be difficult and stressful. Please have a conversation as a family to discuss your thoughts and feelings on masking and what makes your child and family feel comfortable. Greentrike staff, programs, and participating children and families will support and respect the choices of individuals.  Masks will continue to be provided for anyone who requires one.

As per Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21.14, all teaching staff will be fully vaccinated by October 18, 2021. As legally required, Greentrike will reasonably accommodate the medical contraindication and religious practices of its employees.  To maintain compliance with EEOC regulations, we are unable to share the individual vaccination status of Greentrike employees.

Children and teaching staff will wash and sanitize hands thoroughly upon entering the room and then frequently throughout the day. Each child will be assigned a cubby to hold their belongings. Materials, toys, and high-touch surfaces will be sanitized daily.

By dropping your child off each day, you agree to the following:

  • Your child is not experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 not caused by allergies or another condition. Symptoms include fever of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, the recent loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • No one in your household has any COVID-19-like symptoms.
  • Your child has not been in close contact with anyone suspected or confirmed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
  • Your child has not tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days or awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.
  • Within the past 14 days, a public health or medical professional has not told you to self-monitor, self-isolate, or self-quarantine because of concerns about COVID-19 infection.

Camps follow the CDC’s Domestic and International Travel Recommendations.  Children in our program will need to get tested 3-5 days after returning and self-quarantine for a full 5 days after travel.

Program participants and staff exposed to someone with COVID-19 no longer need to quarantine, unless they have COVID-19 symptoms, regardless of their vaccination status.  Individuals exposed to COVID-19 will need to get tested 3-5 days after exposure, regardless of vaccination status, and monitor for symptoms.  It is also encouraged that individuals wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days after exposure.  If symptoms develop, individuals will need to quarantine at home and if symptom onset occurs at school, program participants and staff will be sent home immediately; a negative test will be required to return to school.  Greentrike staff will notify those who were potentially exposed within programs.  Program participants and staff exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of whether they were knowingly exposed or not, must get tested before returning to the classroom.  Any individuals who are symptomatic, but are negative for COVID-19, should consider wearing a mask while participating in our programs to reduce spreading germs to others.

Any adult, child, or staff member who tests positive for COVID-19 must isolate at home for at least 5 full days, regardless of vaccination status. They can resume participation in Greentrike programs on day 6 if they have:

  • No symptoms, or symptoms are improving,
  • No fever in the past 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, AND
  • Test negative with an at-home, antigen, or PCR test after day 5.  Testing after day 10 is not necessary.  If they do not test negative after day 5, they can return after day 10 from the onset of symptoms or date of positive COVID test.

By attending a Greentrike program, you agree that you and your child(ren) are:

  • Not experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 not caused by allergies or another condition.  Symptoms include fever of 100.4 or higher, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, the recent loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Any symptoms of COVID will require a negative test to return to school.  Accepted tests include antigen PCR, administered at home, at a community testing site, or by a healthcare provider.
  • In compliance with any required isolation, detailed above, if they tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medication.
  • Symptom-free from intestinal upsets, vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.

If you are in doubt about whether you or your child(ren) is well enough to attend a Greentrike program, we appreciate you erring on the side of caution and keeping your child home.

As we have observed over the past two years, please note that these guidelines could once again change. As always, our team is grateful for your partnership and the mutual understanding and respect we hold as a community.
