Sensory Inclusive Kits and Spaces at the Children’s Museums of Tacoma and at JBLM

Greentrike has expanded its support for individuals with sensory sensitivity with a partnership with KultureCity, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating accessible and inclusive spaces for individuals with invisible disabilities. Through this collaboration, Greentrike has officially received Sensory Inclusive® Certification, fostering the organization’s continuous commitment to creating welcoming environments for all guests, including those with sensory needs.

As part of this certification, many of the Children’s Museums of Tacoma and at JBLM staff have completed KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive® training. The training equips staff with the tools and awareness needed to better support individuals with autism, PTSD, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, and other sensory sensitivities.

To further enhance accessibility, visitors can check out sensory bags at the Children’s Museum of Tacoma and the Children’s Museum at JBLM. Each bag includes:

• Noise-canceling headphones
• Sunglasses
• A fidget track toy
• A marble fidget toy
• A stretch noodle toy
• A “feelings thermometer”
• A KultureCity VIP lanyard card (optional wearable signal)

These bags are available to check out at the admission desk, free of charge, and are cleaned and restocked between uses.

Visitors will also notice new KultureCity signage throughout both museums:

• “Sensory Bags Available Here” signs at front desks
• Exterior Sensory Inclusive Location decals
• “Headphone Zone” signs in louder areas like the Children’s Museum of Tacoma’s Airways and the Children’s Museum at JBLM’s Wind Wall
• “Quiet Area” signs in designated calm spaces such as the Children’s Museum of Tacoma’s Studio B and the Children’s Museum at JBLM’s Calm area

As part of Greentrike’s mission to honor children and youth and champion play, the KultureCity partnership and sensory kits ensure all children and their families can fully engage in play at every Greentrike Children’s Museum.
