Last week, Governor Inslee moved Pierce County into Phase 2 of COVID-19’s reopening plan. The Children’s Museum of Tacoma has taken this pause in service as an opportunity to build a brand new playscape, and construction is ongoing. Furthermore, we are an extremely hands-on museum, and take the safety of our visitors very seriously. For these reasons, we do not expect to open until April. That said, memberships are available now! They will not activate until we open, but a purchase now means you and your family can be ready the second we do.

As for Play To Learn, we are exploring what’s possible and safe. More information will come out in the following weeks, but for now, we will remain virtual. You can keep up to date here: greentrike.org/play-at-home

We’re so excited to see you in person. Until then, stay safe.

Greentrike’s programs are changing due to the effects of COVID-19. We feel fortunate to keep an essential staffing core, supported by generous donors, and community resources. Here is a look into what our organization is focusing efforts on currently.

TPS Day Camps
With the endorsement and coordination of Tacoma Public Schools, our educators are running multiple classrooms for our youngest students, some of the only preschool care of this kind in the state. These day camps are specifically for children of essential workers, healthcare professionals, and first responders, and the camps will continue through mid June, with hopes to facilitate similar summertime offerings.

Greentrike Cares
Greentrike aims to meet children where they’re at. Greentrike – developmentally, geographically, and in their life circumstances. We piloted Greentrike Cares with Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital many years ago, with the support of the Mary Bridge Brigade. We have now expanded to serve children at theTacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) , YWCA Women’s Support Shelter Amara, and the Tacoma Housing Authorityto provide playful activities to families in stressful situations.

Play at Home
During the Stay Home, Stay Healthy Order, Greentrike created playful digital content for families. Check out our Play at Home page and our Facebook to access videos of your favorite songs, stories, and activities.

Virtual Play to Learn
Last week, Greentrike educators piloted our first virtual Play to Learn circle times. These sessions are hosted through Zoom and mirror our in-person circle times during Play to Learn Pierce County. Registration is now available for our upcoming classes!

Children’s Museum of Tacoma – Currently Closed
While eager to welcome families back to the Museum, we are committed to reopening only when it is safe to do so. The nature of a children’s museum is hands-on play, which is not a practical offering at this time. Once we have more information, we will be excited to share that with you.
